About Our School
Garfield School is a community school that focuses on “every scholar, every day.” As a K-8 school, our students and staff have the opportunity to develop strong relationships and a sense of Wildcat spirit throughout their years at Garfield. Our strong belief in the value of developing well-rounded students. In addition to providing daily Common Core Math Instruction, daily Writer’s Workshop, NGSS science lessons and activities, we strive to provide additional enriching opportunities including: technology based instruction, music and visual arts instruction, and robotics.
Garfield is one of 27 schools in California and 81 schools nationwide to participate in the Turnaround Arts program. The program is based on the premise that high-quality and integrated arts education can strengthen school reform efforts, boost academic achievement, and increase student engagement in schools. As a component of this program, all Garfield students receive 45 minutes of weekly music instruction, engage in arts integrated activities, and have the opportunity to develop their artistic talents through participation in school performances including: music concerts, school musical and a talent show. Additionally, all of the staff are participating in professional development in arts integration strategies such as Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and Tableau/Pantomime/Improvisation.
Garfield also utilizes Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to assure that the academic and behavioral needs of each student are met. Through regular data analysis and review of student performance, all teachers are able to identify the specific needs of each student and differentiate instruction to meet their needs through the use of technology, small group instruction and intervention support.
