About Our School
Garfield School is about family. Our school staff has grounded its principles for good teaching on basic, but indisputable characteristics of good parenting: 1) A good parent knows the needs of the child; 2) a good parent provides for the needs of the child. On a daily basis, Garfield teachers diligently optimize the instructional time when Garfield students are "ours," knowing that we form a formidable partnership with homes to meet academic needs. Garfield staff work to establish lasting relationships with our students and families, but also with each other. Teachers are continuously fostering regular, school-wide collaboration, planning and troubleshooting to meet the needs of each and every child, and for our school as a whole. As teachers take on the challenging responsibility of educating Garfield's diverse student population, they do so with the "we are in this together" mentality: teachers view students as "our children," and "we" work daily to provide a quality, targeted program for each and every student. On a regular basis, Garfield’s staff systematically analyzes data to identify the needs of each child. We have come to know this practice as Data Analysis for Differentiated, Targeted Instruction. By truly knowing each student's academic performance, we are able to identify each student's academic needs and achievements, which results in a plan for each student. Moreover, we also assume the responsibility of providing the most appropriate instruction for each student, based on his/her academic needs. Garfield's utilization of a school-wide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) assures that the academic needs of each student are met. Additionally, we maintain a school wide focus on writing through our systematic implementation of Writer’s Workshop. Each classroom engages in daily Writer’s Workshop so that all of our students develop skills as writers across all genres.
